This heat pack is filled with lupin grain instead of wheat, so it warms in the microwave in a couple of minutes and moulds to a stiff neck or back. Therapeutic Pillow makes the pack in seven sizes shaped for different parts of the body, with weights running from 500g up to 1.7kg.

Lupin holds heat well and the grain moulds to whatever it is warmed against, so it wraps a neck, shoulder or lower back rather than sitting on it as a flat block. Heat suits a stiff, tight muscle, before a session or the morning after one. A fresh knock or strain is different: give it cold in the first day or two, not heat, and the same pack goes in the freezer for that. It is not a fix for an injury on its own, so see a physiotherapist if something is not settling.

Seven sizes cover most of the body. The square (20cm x 20cm) and rectangle (33cm x 13cm) suit a small spot or a hand, while the medium and large body packs (40cm x 19cm and 55cm x 23cm) cover a back or thigh. The neck-shoulder pack is cut to sit over both shoulders, the back wrap runs a 1.5m length for the lower back, and the hand pack warms cold hands. The cover is natural cotton corduroy and the fill is plain lupin grain with no added scent.

Straptor stocks this next to the wider recovery kit, so a club or a household can add it to a tape and accessories order in one go. You get national dispatch, phone advice from people who know the range, and the East Bendigo walk-in if you would rather collect it. For where a heat pack sits in the recovery kit, see the recovery and rehab range, and to weigh it up against a fill-with-ice wrap or a reusable gel pack, browse the full hot and cold therapy range.

What's in the box

  • One lupin heat pack (size as selected)

Usage

Heat the pack in the microwave in short bursts, around 30 seconds at a time, checking the warmth between each burst and stopping once it is comfortably warm rather than hot. Do not overheat it, since the grain can scorch if it is left in too long. Put a layer of fabric between the pack and skin, and never apply it straight from the microwave without testing it first. For cold use, seal it in a bag, chill it in the freezer, then wrap it before it goes against skin.

Care and storage

Sponge the cover gently with lukewarm water to lift surface marks, then hang it up to dry. Once the cover is dry, rub the pack briskly between your hands so the grain dries out too. Do not machine wash it, tumble dry it, dry clean it, or soak it in water. Store it flat, away from sharp edges and damp.

Common questions

Is this a wheat pack? No. It is filled with lupin grain instead of wheat, and it holds heat well, which is why it is sold as an alternative to a wheat heat pack. Pack weights run from 500g for the square up to 1.7kg for the large body size.

Can it be used cold? Yes. Warm it in the microwave for heat, or seal and freeze it for cold.

Which size should I choose? Match the size to the body area: a square or rectangle for a small spot or a hand, the neck-shoulder pack for the shoulders, the back wrap for the lower back, and the medium or large body pack for a back or thigh.

How do I heat it safely? In short microwave bursts, checking between each, until it is comfortably warm. Do not overheat it, and always keep fabric between the pack and skin.

Made by Therapeutic Pillow and stocked by Straptor, Australian owned and run. Heat and cold are described here as everyday muscle care, not as a treatment the pack delivers on its own: heat suits a stiff or sore muscle, while a fresh knock or strain wants cold in the first day or two, and anything that is not settling is a physiotherapist's call. Keep a layer of fabric between the pack and skin, and do not overheat it.
