This is a cooler-and-cuff unit that applies cold and light compression together: the cooler circulates chilled water through an anatomically shaped cuff, so the cuff cools the area and holds light compression at the same time. The base cooler ships with a hose and an AC adaptor, and the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle cuffs are chosen separately to match the area you are wrapping.

The OrthoBrace OrthoCool range is built around one cooler that feeds a set of anatomic cuffs. You fill the cooler with iced water, connect the hose to the cuff you need, and wrap it around the joint. The cuff holds cold against the area while applying light compression, and an automatic pressure release lets excess air out so the wrap does not over-tighten.

The insulated cooler is made to hold cold water longer between refills. Fit the Auto Chill System (sold separately) and the unit re-chills the water on one of eight preset cycles, so there is no manual topping up through a session. Operation is simple enough for home use, with no special setup.

The cuffs cover the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle, each one size fits most and each sold separately, so you buy the cooler once and add the cuff or cuffs that match where you need them. On the variants: choose the cooler on its own, the cooler bundled with the Auto Chill System, an individual Auto Chill System, an individual replacement cooler, or a single cuff. Check which parts a variant includes before you order, since the cuffs and the Auto Chill System are not part of the base cooler.

For when to use cold or compression, and for how long, follow the instructions supplied with the unit and speak with a physiotherapist or health professional. For where cold and compression sit in a recovery routine, see the recovery guidance linked below.

Usage

Fill the cooler with iced water, connect the hose to the cuff for the joint you are wrapping, and wrap the cuff around the area. The cooler circulates cold water through the cuff while the cuff holds light compression, and the automatic release vents excess air so it does not grip too hard. With the Auto Chill System fitted, the unit re-chills the water on a preset cycle rather than being topped up by hand. Follow the instructions supplied with the unit for how and how long to use it, and check with a physiotherapist or health professional about how cold and compression fit into your recovery routine.

Care and storage

Empty the cooler and let the cuff dry before storing. Keep the cooler, hose and adaptor dry between uses.

Common questions

Are the cuffs included with the cooler? No. The cooler is the base unit; the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle cuffs are chosen and bought separately, as is the Auto Chill System.

Which cuff do I need? Pick the cuff that matches the joint you are wrapping. Each cuff is one size fits most.

Does it apply compression as well as cold? Yes. The cuff holds light compression while chilled water circulates through it, and an automatic release stops it over-tightening.

Do I need the Auto Chill System? No, the cooler works on iced water on its own. The Auto Chill System re-chills the water automatically on a preset cycle, which saves topping it up by hand.

Product is of good quality. Design needs improvement.

Product is of good quality, but could be better;
However the compression pump could be stronger.
I find it difficult to feel the coldness transfer into the ankle cuff.
The cuff could also be better designed to fully enclose the limb as really only 3 sides get the contact of the hydo-pressure.
The Esky container is relative small which this limits the amount of ice or freeze Blocks you can put into the chamber with water..
