Before a defibrillator's pads can make good contact, the chest has to be bare, dry and clear of clothing. This kit holds the six items a rescuer reaches for to get a patient ready: a razor for chest hair, shears to cut through a shirt, a towel to dry sweaty skin, a pair of nitrile gloves, a hard-cased CPR mask and a biohazard bag.

The kit is a preparation pack, not a defibrillator. It sits in the first-aid bag next to the AED so the person running the scene has everything the pads need in one clear case. The surgical razor clears hair from the pad sites, the 19cm trauma shears cut away a jersey or shirt, and the towel dries skin that is wet with sweat or rain. The gloves and the biohazard bag are there for the rescuer, and the hard-cased CPR mask has an oxygen port if oxygen is being run.

Everything is packed in a clear PVC case with a zip closure, so the contents can be seen at a glance and nothing goes missing between checks. It is the basic set of items a first-aider works through before the AED's own pads are applied. The kit does not include a defibrillator or the pads themselves, which are supplied with the AED.

Straptor is Australian owned and run, and keeps the defibrillator range and its accessories side by side, stocked at the East Bendigo walk-in and available online. Clubs and workplaces fitting out more than one site can order in quantity or call to set up a reorder, and the phone line is answered by people who know the range. The kit sits alongside the units, batteries and pads in our defibrillator range, and the defibrillators overview page walks through how the pieces fit together.

Usage

Glove up first, then cut away clothing over the chest with the shears. Dry the skin with the towel if it is wet or sweaty, and shave the two pad sites with the razor if the chest is hairy. Then apply the defibrillator's own pads and follow the AED's spoken or printed instructions. Used items and any hair or clothing go in the biohazard bag.

Care and storage

Store the case somewhere dry and check it against the contents list when you service the rest of the kit, so used or missing items are replaced before they are needed. The razor, gloves and mask are single-patient items and are not reused.

Common questions

Does it include a defibrillator or pads? No. This is a preparation kit only. The AED and its pads are separate, and the pads come with the defibrillator.

Why shave the chest? Hair sits between the pad and the skin and stops the pad making contact. The razor clears the two pad sites so the pads can be applied to bare skin.

Are the gloves latex free? The gloves supplied are nitrile, which is a latex-free material. We don't make a latex-free claim for the kit as a whole, so check the item labels if a specific latex sensitivity is a concern.

Who is it for? Clubs, schools, gyms, workplaces and anyone keeping an AED on site who wants the prep items ready in one case rather than gathered on the day.
