How to Strap an Ankle: Sprains, Sport and Support
A rolled ankle is one of the most common injuries on a netball court, a basketball court and a footy field, and the strap that goes on in the change room is often what gets a player through to the final siren. Knowing how to strap an ankle properly is a genuine skill, and it is one every trainer, coach and self-reliant athlete is better off having. Done well, a strap limits the movement that causes damage and gives the joint support while it settles. Done badly, it slips by half-time or cuts off circulation, and both of those are worse than no tape at all.
This is a practical guide to strapping an ankle for support, for a sprain, for a rolled or twisted ankle, and for the demands of real team sport. It does not treat or cure a serious injury, and it is never a substitute for having a proper look at what is wrong.
Why strap an ankle
The ankle rolls because the foot turns inward under load, usually when landing, cutting or stepping on someone's foot. That inward roll is an inversion sprain, and it stretches or tears the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. It is the most common ankle sprain in sport by a wide margin, which is why almost all ankle strapping is built to resist the ankle rolling inward.
A good strap does two useful things. Rigid tape mechanically limits the end of that inward movement, checking the joint before it reaches the range that does most harm. What you need before you start
Good strapping is mostly preparation. The materials are cheap and the technique is learnable, but skipping the prep is why tape lifts early.

- Elastic adhesive bandage (EAB). Useful as a softer outer layer or for a lock-off over rigid anchors where you want a little give.
- Pre-wrap (under-wrap). A thin foam layer that protects the skin, especially over hairy legs or for someone who tapes often. It reduces skin damage on removal at a small cost to grip.
- Adhesive spray. A light spray on clean skin helps anchors hold, particularly in heat or for a long game.
- Sharp tape scissors. Blunt scissors tear tape and skin. Keep a dedicated pair.
- Skin prep. Clean, dry skin, hair managed, no moisturiser or sweat. This is the single biggest factor in whether the strap lasts.
General ankle support strap: step by step
This is the standard support strap used across Australian sport, applied with rigid tape and the foot held at a right angle to the leg (not pointed). Work from the skin outward and keep each strip smooth, with no wrinkles or ridges. Take your time the first few times; speed comes later.
- Prep and pre-wrap. Clean and dry the skin. If you are using pre-wrap, run it from mid-foot up to about a third of the way up the lower leg. If you are taping straight onto skin, a light adhesive spray helps.
- Anchors. Lay two anchor strips: one around the lower leg, roughly a third of the way up, and one around the mid-foot. These are the foundation the rest of the strap pulls between. Keep them firm but not tight, and never right on the edge of a bony point.
- Stirrups. Run a strip from the inner anchor, down under the heel, and up the outside of the ankle to the leg anchor, pulling gently upward and outward as it comes up the outside. This is the strip that resists the ankle rolling in. Lay two or three stirrups, each overlapping the last by about half a width.
- Horseshoes. Between or over the stirrups, run horizontal strips around the back of the ankle in a horseshoe shape, tying the stirrups together and locking them down.
- Heel locks. Take a strip diagonally across the front of the ankle, around the back of the heel, and back across, so the tape catches the heel and holds it against rolling. A heel lock on each side, sometimes carried through as a figure-six or figure-eight over the foot, is what gives the strap its real anti-inversion hold.
- Close off. Finish with horseshoe strips to cover any gaps and lock the ends down, smoothing everything flat.

How to strap a sprained ankle
Timing matters more than technique with a fresh sprain. In the first day or two after an acute sprain the priority is protection, gentle loading as tolerated, ice, compression and elevation. This is not the moment for a tight rigid strap over a swollen, painful ankle. Rigid tape over acute swelling can compress the joint and cut circulation as the swelling builds.
Before you strap a sprain at all, rule out anything worse than a sprain. If the person cannot take four steps on the ankle, if there is bony tenderness over the ankle bones, or if there is an obvious deformity, that needs assessment before any tape goes near it. Strapping a possible fracture does harm, not good.
Once the acute phase settles and the ankle can bear weight and move with only moderate discomfort, a support strap has a clear role in the return-to-sport window. Apply the general support strap above, err on the side of slightly less tension than you would on an uninjured ankle, and check circulation carefully. How to strap a rolled or twisted ankle
A rolled or twisted ankle is the everyday name for the same inversion mechanism, and the strapping is the same general support strap. The difference is judgement. A minor roll that the athlete has walked off within a few minutes and can weight-bear on is reasonable to strap for support. A significant twist with rapid swelling, a lot of pain, or the ankle giving way is not one to tape and send back out.
If you are strapping a recently twisted ankle for the rest of a session, keep the tension moderate, favour the stirrups and heel locks that resist inversion, and tell the athlete plainly to come off if it worsens, goes numb, or the toes change colour. A strap can carry someone through the back half of a game. It cannot see inside the joint, and it is not a green light to push through a real injury.
Strapping an ankle with ligament damage
Ligament damage sits on a spectrum, from an overstretched ligament to a partial tear to a full rupture. Taping supports a damaged ligament by limiting the movement that would load it, which can be genuinely helpful for a low-grade injury during rehabilitation and return to sport. What tape does not do is repair a ligament or hold a badly torn one together.
The more severe the injury, the smaller the role tape plays and the larger the role of proper assessment and rehabilitation. A significant tear, a joint that keeps giving way, or an injury that is not improving over a couple of weeks needs a physiotherapist or doctor, not more tape. Strapping for your sport
The core ankle strap is the same across codes, but the context differs. In netball the ankle is the single most-injured body region, with the classic mechanism being a bad landing or a foot-on-foot contact under the post, so trainers tape ankles heavily and prophylactic taping is close to routine for players with a prior sprain. Strapping an ankle with kinesiology tape versus rigid tape
These two tapes do different jobs, and choosing between them starts with what you actually want. Rigid tape restricts movement. It is the choice for firm mechanical support, for guarding against a repeat inversion, and for return to a landing or cutting sport. Its support does fade as it loosens with activity, so it is best thought of as protection for a session rather than something to wear all day.

The honest position, and the one worth being straight about, is that the evidence for those effects is mixed and the colour makes no difference to how it works. How long to keep the tape on and how to remove it
Rigid tape is a short-term support, not something to leave on for days. As a rule, tape for the training session or the game and take it off afterwards. Its mechanical hold degrades within the first half-hour of hard activity anyway, so a fresh strap next session beats a stretched, grubby one worn on.
Remove tape slowly, peeling in the direction of hair growth and supporting the skin as you go, rather than ripping it off. Blunt-nosed tape scissors or a proper tape cutter make this safer, run flat against the skin. Never re-tighten a strap that has loosened by adding more over the top; take it off and re-apply. If the skin is red, broken or irritated, give it a rest and use pre-wrap or a gentler tape next time.
Common mistakes when strapping an ankle
The most common fault, by a distance, is tape applied too tight. A strap should support the joint, not choke it. If the athlete reports numbness, pins and needles, throbbing, or if the toes go pale, cold or dusky, the strap comes off and goes back on looser. Get in the habit of checking the toes for warmth and colour after every strap, before the athlete runs on it.
