Rigid tape (strapping and athletic tape)

Rigid tape is the non-stretch, woven-cotton tape most people picture when they think of white sports tape. It is also sold as strapping tape or athletic tape, and the terms all describe the same thing: a firm cloth tape designed to limit how far a joint can move. It is the classic choice for the ankle, thumb and wrist, where the aim is to block a harmful end-range movement while still letting the athlete play.

The support is mechanical. Applied fresh, rigid tape measurably reduces peak ankle inversion during running, landing and change of direction, which is the movement behind most rolled ankles. That effect loosens as the tape is worn and stressed through a game, so it does not hold at full strength for the whole match. Elastic adhesive tape (EAB)

Elastic adhesive bandage, almost always shortened to EAB, is a flexible strapping tape that stretches to allow controlled movement while still supporting. It sits between rigid tape and kinesiology tape: the stretch is real but limited, and unlike a cohesive bandage it sticks directly to skin. That combination makes it the go-to where a joint or a large muscle needs support without being locked down.

Cohesive bandage

A cohesive bandage sticks to itself but not to skin or hair. It is impregnated with a tacky elastomer that bonds layer to layer when you wrap it, then tears by hand and comes off cleanly at the end of the session. Because it does not pull on skin, it is comfortable over hairy areas and easy to remove without the wince that comes with adhesive tape.

Its jobs are light compression, holding a dressing or an ice pack in place, and securing rigid or EAB work without adding another sticky layer. It is not a substitute for firm joint support, so treat it as a securing and compression tool rather than a stabiliser. Kinesiology tape

Kinesiology tape, sometimes called physio tape, is the thin, stretchy, coloured tape you see on athletes. It is designed to lengthen with the skin and move with the body rather than restrict it, so it does not immobilise a joint the way rigid tape does. Athletes use it for lighter support, for a sense of feedback on the taped area, and for comfort during a return to activity.

Be honest about what it does. The clinical evidence for kinesiology tape is mixed: there is a small, short-term pain-modulation signal in some conditions, but it does not provide mechanical joint support, it does not drain swelling from a sports injury, and it does not make muscles stronger or improve performance in healthy athletes. Pre-wrap, underwrap and adhesive spray: the support layer

Pre-wrap, also called underwrap, is a thin foam layer applied to the skin before rigid or elastic tape. It reduces direct contact with the adhesive, cuts friction, eases removal and spares hair when the tape comes off. It is a comfort and skin-protection accessory rather than an evidence-backed clinical intervention, so use it for what it is good at without expecting it to add support.

Adhesive spray does the opposite job: it improves the hold where sweat and movement would otherwise lift the tape. What sports tape is actually made from

Kinesiology tape is different again, a thin elastic cotton or rayon backing with an acrylic adhesive laid down in a wave pattern rather than a solid film, which lets it stretch and breathe.

Skin prep, latex-free and staying safe

Good skin prep makes any tape work better. Clean, dry, hair-managed skin holds tape longer, and pre-wrap or a light adhesive spray helps on sensitive or sweaty areas. If your skin is reactive, patch test a small piece first, and choose a latex-free or specified rosin-free tape where a sensitivity history exists.

Never tape over broken skin, open wounds, blisters or a suspected fracture or deformity.
