How to Strap a Wrist: Support, Sprains and Tendonitis
A wrist gives way on a fall, a spare hand goes down to break it, and the joint bends further than it should. Or it just aches by the back end of a session under load. Knowing how to strap a wrist buys you protection while you train and play, and it takes about ninety seconds once you have the pattern down. This guide splits the job by what is actually wrong: general support, a sprain, tendonitis and overuse, and full contact sport.
Start with the honest bit. Tape supports a wrist and limits the movement that irritates it, it does not heal the injury underneath. Treat a strap as protection during load and a bridge back to full training, not a cure. Why tape a wrist
The wrist is a stack of small joints sitting between the forearm and the hand, and it takes load in almost every sport that puts a ball in your hands or a hand on the ground. Most wrist complaints a trainer sees fall into three groups. Sprains, where the ligaments get overstretched. Overuse, where the tendons get irritated by repeated load. And hyperextension, where the wrist bends too far back, usually from a fall on an outstretched hand.
A strap helps by limiting the range of movement that provokes the pain, giving the joint a firmer platform to work from, and reminding the wrist where its safe limits are while it settles. What it does not do is repair a torn ligament or a stressed tendon. That is why the method matters more than how tight you pull.
How do you strap a wrist? Anchor the tape around the forearm just above the wrist, run figure-of-eight passes across the front and back of the wrist crease to control the movement that hurts, then close with a second anchor. The support comes from the pattern over the joint, not from wrapping tightly like a bandage. Get that idea right and the rest is detail.
What you need before you start
Good wrist strapping starts with the right kit within reach, not halfway through when your hands are already taped up. For most wrist jobs you want:
- Rigid strapping tape (25 to 38 mm) for firm support and to limit range
- Elastic or kinesiology tape for lighter support and feedback
- Pre-wrap (underwrap) to protect the skin under rigid tape
- Sharp taping scissors
- Clean, dry skin, with any hair trimmed rather than shaved raw
Skin prep is the step that gets skipped under time pressure, and it is why tape lifts by half-time. Clean and dry the wrist, trim excess hair, and lay a strip of pre-wrap down first if the skin is sensitive or the strap is coming on and off across a season. How to strap a wrist for general support
This is the everyday method for a niggling wrist that needs backup during training, and it doubles as the base you build the other techniques on. It is the answer to how to strap a wrist for support without locking it up completely.
- Sit the wrist in a neutral, slightly extended position, the way it naturally rests when the fingers are relaxed. Do not tape it dead straight or bent.
- Lay down an anchor: one to two turns of tape around the forearm, roughly a hand's width above the wrist crease. Keep it firm but not choking.
- Run the first figure-of-eight. From the forearm anchor, bring the tape diagonally across the back of the wrist, around under the hand below the knuckles, and back across the front to the forearm. That crossing over the wrist crease is what gives the support.
- Repeat the figure-of-eight two or three more times, overlapping each pass by about half the tape width, building support without building bulk.
- Close with a light anchor over the forearm end and one across the hand, so no cut edge is left to peel.
- Check circulation straight away. Ask the athlete to make a fist and spread the fingers. If the fingers go numb, tingle, feel cold or change colour, the tape is too tight: take it off and reapply looser. This is not optional.

How to strap a sprained wrist
A sprained wrist needs firmer control than general support, because the goal is to stop the joint reaching the end of the range where the injured ligament complains. Rigid tape does this job. Build the same figure-of-eight base, then add one or two extra passes biased toward blocking the painful direction, usually backward bending after a hyperextension, or sideways movement toward the little finger.
Before you tape a sprained wrist, one caution that trainers take seriously. A fall on an outstretched hand can fracture the scaphoid, a small wrist bone, and a scaphoid fracture is the most commonly missed break in the wrist. If there is tenderness in the small hollow at the base of the thumb, pain gripping, or the wrist is not settling over a few days, that is a get-it-checked situation, not a tape-it-and-play one. Taping a fracture does not fix it and can mask a problem that needs imaging.
Wrist tendonitis and overuse
Wrist tendonitis and repetitive strain sit in a different category to a sprain. These are load-management problems first. Tape can limit the movement that provokes the pain and act as a reminder to ease off, but the real work is rest, technique and a look at what is loading the wrist in the first place, whether that is a training spike, a grip fault or hours at a keyboard. Carpal tunnel is a separate problem again: it is nerve compression rather than tendon overuse, so numbness, tingling or weakness in the hand that persists is a get-it-assessed situation, not something to tape over.
For overuse, lighter is usually better than locked down. A single supportive strip or a kinesiology tape application gives feedback and a gentle limit without the firm restriction a sprain needs. Wrist taping for contact sport
Contact and load-bearing codes ask more of a wrist strap. In AFL, rugby league, basketball and netball the wrist takes falls, marks, tackles and hard catches, and the strap has to survive contact and sweat. For these codes, rigid tape is the workhorse, applied firmly enough to block hyperextension while still letting the athlete grip and catch.
Build the general support base, then reinforce the direction of risk. For a wrist that bends back too far on a fall or a mark, add a fan of strips across the front of the wrist crease to check that backward range. Anchor everything well, because a strap that lets go mid-game is worse than no strap. A cohesive outer layer over the top helps it survive the sweat and contact of a full match.
Wrist and thumb taped together
Plenty of wrist injuries involve the thumb as well, and in sports like rugby league and basketball the two often get taped as one unit. Once your wrist base is on, you can run the thumb support off the same forearm anchor, looping the tape around the base of the thumb and back to the wrist to limit the thumb bending away from the hand.

Rigid tape vs kinesiology tape for the wrist
The two tapes do different jobs, and picking the wrong one is the most common reason a wrist strap disappoints. Rigid tape restricts range and gives firm mechanical stability. It is the right choice for a sprain, for hyperextension, and for contact sport where you genuinely need to limit how far the joint moves.
Kinesiology tape is elastic and moves with the skin. It gives lighter support and some proprioceptive feedback, but it does not lock the joint. The evidence for it is genuinely mixed: research supports a small, short-term effect on pain and comfort for some people, but it does not provide the mechanical restriction a rigid strap does, and colour makes no difference to how it works. Treat it as a supportive aid for niggles and overuse, not a fix for an unstable wrist. Common wrist strapping mistakes
- Taping too tight. Numbness, tingling, cold fingers or a colour change means it comes off and goes back on looser. Every time.
- Wrapping like a bandage. Support comes from the figure-of-eight over the wrist crease, not from circular turns pulled hard.
- No anchors. Without a forearm and hand anchor to hold the pattern, the strap slides and loosens within minutes.
- Skipping skin prep. Tape on damp, dirty or hairy skin lifts by half-time.
- Taping over broken skin, an open wound, a suspected fracture or an obviously deformed joint. Do not.
- Leaving it on too long. Remove tape if pain worsens under it or the skin reacts, take it off slowly in the direction of hair growth, and do not sleep in a tight rigid strap.

- Pain that is severe, worsening, or stops you training
- A wrist that cannot grip or bear weight
- Rapid or severe swelling, or an obviously deformed joint
- Numbness, pins and needles, or fingers that change colour
- Tenderness in the hollow at the base of the thumb after a fall on an outstretched hand, which can signal a scaphoid fracture and needs imaging to rule out
- A wrist that keeps giving way, or symptoms that are not settling after a few days
None of these are things tape sorts out on its own. Getting them assessed early is what keeps a small wrist problem from turning into a long one.
